About 44 per cent of savers starting an SMSF are aged under 45 years, with about one-third of new members aged between 35 and 45 years, according to the latest analysis by the Australian Taxation Office.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum, many investors in the demographic bulge of over 65-year-olds are challenged by the potential legal and investing complexities of running a fund as they age.

The dilemma is worsened by a crippling shortage of financial advisers.
